Holocaust Survivors

The mass murder known as the Holocaust unmercifully eliminated an estimated six million Jews, including many children. This atrocity occurred over a period of approximately 31 months beginning in March of 1942. Despite the deplorable conditions thrust upon them, some of the victims, known as holocaust survivors, lived to tell their stories.

Holocaust survivors tell of the methods they used to stay alive. Some assumed Polish or German names until they were recognized and betrayed. Others placed their children in the care of Christian families or convents so that their children, at least, would be safe. The majority of those children have no knowledge of their ancestry, since most parents and other family were annihilated. Many Christian families, at great peril to themselves, hid Jews in their homes. These Holocaust survivors tell their stories of the righteous gentiles who concealed them.

The atmosphere in the concentration camps was that of a slaughterhouse. The death chamber was often a dark basement room supplied with air from a small hole created by the removal of one brick. It was commonplace to shoot prisoners randomly. Beatings were also common. The Holocaust survivors tell how prisoners were forced to watch the torture and murder of friends, family, and other prisoners. Many continue to suffer from nightmares or haunting memories. The courage of those Holocaust survivors who are willing to share their stories is incredible.
